The most obvious quick fix is to allow renewables to participate in voltage control. That was illegal in Spain at the time of the blackout. This alone would have prevented this incident. The grid code is updated now.

I think it foreshadows a future in which every battery system connected to the grid has a grid forming inverter. Every one of them becomes a source of frequency and voltage stabilisation. The grid becomes rock solid.

And I predict it will go further: these battery systems with grid forming inverters with batteries attached will disconnect from the grid during a blackout and this effectively means they provide a firewall aka UPS for everyone attached to them.
