I spotted the first chocolate lily blossoms of the year on my hike this weekend. I'm glad I caught them because they don't last long and they are rather unique.

So am I! Last year I saw them at about this stage, then a few days later I went to see them again and they were quite wilted and withered.

Nice catch. Never seen one before. I have black bearded iris but they aren't doing well out here. Only one bloom in the last five years. Going to be transplanted this year to different spot to see if it improves. Really unique bloom. Nice pic.

One of my favorites and theyโ€™re always a bit of a surprise. With their subtle coloring itโ€™s almost like they do a bit of camouflage there in the woods

I agree! They like the shade, so they kind of blend in with the shadow.

I had exactly the same thought, these are snakeshead fritalaira but Iโ€™ve no idea if they are the same or similar to the original poster

Some cultivar of this, I think (there are pictures which resemble the one in your picture more further down the page):

Very nice... we know of one location for them, at around 3,000 ft elevation, it will be several more weeks before they appear.

This could be early for us since we've had so much heat, everything is ahead of schedule. I haven't seen very many of them, so they aren't real common yet.

I have these in my backyard in Santa Barbara, CA... they came up by themselves, I didn't plant them. They're a real treasure for a short time

Absolutely no offense meant, my first visual impression was eggplant, not chocolate. Unless of course we are talking about Dubai chocolate which has green pistachio nuts throughout it which I am very fond of, then, well ok .... it is chocolate, you are absolutely correct.

That's the name of the plant. I agree that it's more eggplant color.

If you go back later when the flower has died and look at the center you will find seeds inside a green pod. Wait till it turns brown then you can pock it and collect the seeds and grow your own. I have rescued many seeds this way. Once I get them growing I can share with others.
