Can you explain this for my friend who has no idea what symbolism or else is involved here that makes people hate the poppy?

Still read the article for contextual answers re: Cannon Fodder, but I'll leave a short history blurb on the symbol in general.

The poppy, said to grow on soldiers' graves in WWI, is a symbol for US veterans' issues. Last 105yrs, "Buddy Poppies" are crafted as mementos for fundraising & awareness.

I guess naming the game "Cannon Fodder" and displaying enormous fields of tombstones was still too subtle like for these people.
Probably the same "critics" that thought Robocop or Starship Troopers were pro fascism.
